Basics of the Immune System

The immune system is a system of many biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease.
To function properly, an immune system must be able to recognize the native cells of its host as ‘self’, and therefore, distinguish them from all abnormal or foreign cells and structures which gain access to, or are present in the body, in order to stage appropriate defensive maneuvers. These foreign structures include all types of infecting pathogens as well as cancerous tumor cells.
The immune system comprises multiple organs, including the spleen, bone marrow, and thymus. However, elements of the immune system are present in all tissues, such as Kupffer cells (immobilized macrophages) which line the sinusoids of the liver, or Langerhans cells, immune cells interspersed among the keratinocytes of the skin.

The immune system consists of many different types of cells:

  • B-cells
  • T-cells
  • Natural killer cells
  • Eosinophils

There are 2 different type of immunity:

  • Innate Immunity (non-specific immunity)

Innate immunity involves a number of broad functions:

  • Recruitment of immune cells to an infection site through production of chemical factors or mediators (cytokines) at the damage site
  • The complement cascade is activated, which identifies pathogens, activates immune cells, promotes clearance of antibody complexes and dead cells
  • Identifies and removes foreign substances in tissues, organs, lymph and blood, via specialized white blood cells
  • Activated the adaptive immune system via the process of Antigen Presentation
  • Acts as a physical barrier (epithelium) against infectious agents

Adaptive or acquired immunity takes advantage of the immune system’s ability to demonstrate memory once exposed to a pathogen which has specific identifying markers associated with it. Initial exposure will require a much longer period of time by your body to eliminate the invaders (approximately 4-8 days, or longer depending on the condition of the immune system and other factors). The second attempt by identical invading pathogens will involve much swifter processing by your immune system, and the host may not even know that there was an infection present. This is the basis behind the immunization process, and the properties of memory, which the adaptive aspect of the immune system possesses.immune-1


Optimizing the immune system is crucial and a must in maintaining a DISEASE FREE LONG LIFE. It is common knowledge that a weakened immune system leaves the host vulnerable to infection, and to other diseases including cancer. Cancer is a disease of Compromised Immunity.

An opportunistic infection is an infection caused by a pathogen which takes advantage of a host with a weakened or compromised immune system (or an altered microbiota, such as a diminished gut flora, post treatment with antibiotics). Many of these pathogens do not cause disease in a healthy host who has a normal immune system. Often, gut flora cannot be restored by the body to its prior levels before the use of antibiotics. Simply, antibiotics compromise body’s immunity. Prolonged use of antibiotics reduces the body’s inherent immunity as such increases the risk of cancer.

The same pattern can be described of tumor formation. Therefore, it can be restated, that an optimized (or amplified) immune system must be capable of destroying invading pathogens as well as suppressing the development of tumors in its host, and will continue to do so, as long as the health of the immune system is maintained.
